What is a Gerund? | Examples of Gerund

GERUND with Examples

FORM — VERB + ING
————————————
INFINITE VERBS ARE GENERALLY CLASSIFIED AS:-

1) Infinitive:- I learnt to ride.
2) PARTICIPLE:- I joined a riding school.
3) GERUND:- I know riding.
4) Verbal Noun:- I learnt the riding of
horses.

You see in example no.2 ‘ riding ‘ has been used as an Adjective but in example no.3

‘ riding ‘ has been used as Noun. This is the basic difference in between PRESENT PARTICIPLE and GERUND.
Now, let’s see the following sentences:-

1)Writing poetry is a great art.
2) I like reading novels.
3) What she does best is painting.
4) I would like to have the pleasure of
listening to your music.
5) His mother scolded him for disobeying
his father.
6) I am fond of listening to Tagore songs.
7) Everything depends on your passing
the examination.
8) He entered the room without his father’s
knowing.
9) He went out with a fishing- rod.

You see in every sentence we have used verb + ing form. But if we study these sentences we will find that-
in sentence no.1 GERUND has been used as Subject, in sentence no.2 as object, in sentence no.3 as complement, in sentences 4,5,6 after prepositions, in 7 and 8 as possessive case of Pronoun and lastly in sentence no.9 ‘ fishing-rod’ has been used as Compound Noun or Nominal Compound. So, these are the uses of GERUND.

There are also some cases where we may use any form of verb i.e. Infinitive or Gerund – without changing the meaning of the sentence. Such as–

1) To sleep late is bad for health.
Sleeping late is bad for health.
2) She likes to eat apples.
She likes eating apples.

But there are some verbs after which generally GERUND form of the verbs are used. Here is a list of these types of verbs:-
Prevent, insist, excel, hinder, succeed, refrain, stop, finish, help, begin, commence, admit, understand, suggest, defer, avoid, anticipate, delay, defer, deny, enjoy, escape, prevent, recollect, resist, forgive, involve, pardon etc.

Here we should remember that GERUND is also used in short prohibitions:-

  • No smoking. No loitering. No spitting.
